- An interesting read. Many organisations are now looking for alternatives that are smaller, easier to license and provide consistency/compatibility for existing and emerging document standards. However, one of the largest issues surrounding a migration to an alternative suite is the time taken to retrain users to become familiar. May I suggest taking a look at Kingsoft Office 2009. It provides 100% compatibility but is designed specially for situations such as this. It is new and solves many of the problems outlined here. http://www.KSOffice.net

Some more alternative free office suites
- You may also try SSuite Office for a free office suite. They have a whole range of office suites that are free for download that will meet all your demands. Their software also don't need to run on Java or .NET, so it makes the software very small and efficient. openOffice.org
- Word is large complicated and has lots of buttons that are not very intuitive. The main reason to use it is that everyone uses the format that it incorporates. Open office eliminates this argument for word, and while it may not be the most intuitive program, it is still more intuitive to a few of the Microsoft word programs that I have used. The thing that frustrates me is that it is nearly impossible to find a program that will work with Word, including Works Word, which was also made by Microsoft. The latest version of Word that I used, which came with vista, was even worse because it couldn't seem to match up with the older versions of word, and had the buttons that I used most on separate tabs, with no way that i could find of changing it. Open office does a pretty good job of dealing with most of these problems. another good solution is Google docs, because it allows you to access the documents you have created from any computer that has the internet. I also like that it is free.
