Working With Word's Personalized Menus

By James Marshall, About.com

Microsoft recently introduced personalized menus to Word, a feature that can be confusing to some users. When you click a menu, not all of the menu options appear immediately – only those options that you use frequently appear. The idea is to keep the menus free of clutter so you can find what you need at a quick glance. Of course, you can still access the remaining options from the menus using any of the following steps:

1. Double click a menu on the menu bar
2. Click a menu on the menu bar and wait a few seconds for it to “unfold,” showing all the available options
3. Click the menu on the menu bar and then click the double arrow at the bottom of the menu

If you don’t like the personalized menu feature, you can turn it off by following these steps:

1. From the Tools menu, select Customize…
2. Click the Options tab
3. Under Personalized Menus and Toolbars check the box beside Always show full menus
4. Click Close

The next time you click on a menu, the entire contents will appear.
