Saving Your Document Under a Different Name

By , About.com Guide

Rather than create a document from scratch, many users frequently use old documents as the basis of new documents – it is a great way to save time when you’re working in Word.

The problem comes when it is time to save the document; saving it the traditional way by using the ctrl + S shortcut key or using the save icon on the toolbar will over-write the old document.

If you’re like most users, you’ll want to preserve copies of your work. Fortunately, you have the option of saving your work as a new file, preserving both the old and new file on your hard drive or removable media.

You can access the Save As… command from the File menu or by using the F12 function key. The Save As dialog box will open, presenting you with the same options as the Save dialog box.

A note about using the Save As… feature: it is a great idea to use the Save As… feature before you start altering your document, as it is easy to inadvertently save your document using the same name. This is particularly true if you’re in the habit of saving your document while you’re working on it.
