Working With the Pulse Smartpen

The software that comes with the Pulse is intuitive and easy to use. Once you dock the pen, your notes and recordings are uploaded to the software. You can then review your notes and recordings on your computer.

Better yet, the software archives your notes. This makes it easy to review your previous notes and recordings.

The software also allows you to upload documents to Livescribe's online service. From there, you can share your notes with others.

Although the software is slick and well designed, it lacks optical character resolution. This is a big detractor for business users. I'm sure many would forgo some of the more advanced features in favor of optical character resolution.

That said, the notes can be exported in PDF format. So, they should work with optical character recognition software.

Livescribe Pulse Bottom Line

The Livescribe Pulse smartpen is fun to use. Users will particularly appreciate the mobility it provides. And, taking notes that can be transferred to your computer will save you a lot of time.

One glaring omission is the absence of Optical character recognition tools. However, third-party OCR programs should be able to translate your notes to type-written text.

The Livescribe Pulse is particularly useful to students. It's a great way to take notes in class. And, the recording feature enhances this. Using the software or the paper, you can listen to recorded notes associated with handwritten text. It also captures drawings, perfect for science and math classes.

There are also fun features that students will love. The ability to perform calculations--and play music on a drawn keyboard are nice touches.

Professionals probably won't be interested in some of the features the Pulse offers. However, that doesn't mean they won't appreciate the smartpen. It is ideal for journalists and anyone who attends a lot of meetings or frequently takes notes.

The price of the pen is reasonable, and frequent users are sure to get their money's worth.
