Introduction to Headers and Footers
Headers and footers are essential for research papers and other academic works. You’ll also want to use them with business documents like reports and training manuals. For example, you can put document titles, page numbers and document tracking information in headers and footers in Word.

Headers and footers are outside the document body. So, they will always retain the correct placement, no matter how much you edit your document.

Word gives you a considerable number of advanced options for working with headers and footers. For example, you can insert AutoText entries like dates, page numbers and filename and directory path. The AutoText entries will update automatically as the document changes.

You can also specify different headers and/or footers for the first page and the rest of the document. Or, if you insert section breaks, you can even give every single page in your Word document a different header and footer!
