By James Marshall, About.com

Line numbering is a standard part of legal documents. But, line numbers can help you with any document. They make it easy for you to refer to specific portions of text.

To add line numbers to a Word 2007 document, simply follow these steps:

1. Open the Page Layout ribbon

2. Click the Line Numbers button in the Page Setup section

3. Select how you would like the line numbers formatted. For example, you can opt for continuous line numbers. Or, have them restart at the beginning of each page or section.

4. For advanced options, select Line Numbering Options.

You may want to suppress line numbering for certain portions of your document. Follow these steps to suppress the numbering:

1. Position the cursor in the paragraph for which you'd like to suppress numbering

2. Open the Page Layout ribbon
