By James Marshall, About.com

Charts are an excellent way to display complicated data. So, it isn’t surprising that charts are an integral part of many business and academic documents. Fortunately, Word 2008 makes it easy to insert charts into your documents.

To insert a chart in your Word 2008 document, follow these easy steps:

1. Click the Charts button at the top of the window

2. Select a chart type from the ribbon that appears

3. You can limit your options to a particular style by using the buttons above the chart thumbnails

4. The chart will be inserted into your document at the point where the cursor is positioned

5. Excel opens so you can enter data for your chart

6. Once you finish editing the data for your chart, press Enter; the chart is updated automatically

7. You do not need to save the Excel file containing the chart data

8. You may want to change the chart’s formatting. In that case, right click the border surrounding the chart and select Format Chart Area.
