Adding Symbols and Special Characters to Word 2008 Documents

By James Marshall, About.com

Sooner or later, you will want to insert symbols and special characters in a Word 2008 document. Fortunately, you can insert a wide variety of symbols in your document, from fractions to currency symbols to accented letters.

Unfortunately, it is difficult inserting symbols and special characters if you don’t know where to look for them. And, Word 2008 hides symbols and special characters quite well!

To insert a symbol or special character, follow these simple steps:

1. Open the Toolbox by clicking the Toolbox button on the Standard Toolbar

2. Open the Object Palette. The icon looks like a picture of trees with a plus symbol in front of it

3. Click the copyright symbol to open a panel containing available symbols

4. You can use the dropdown box to select the types of symbols to display

5. Use the scroll bar to scroll through your options

6. Click a symbol to insert it at the cursor position in your document.
