Running a Compatibility Report in Word 2008

By James Marshall, About.com

The Word documents you create in Word 2008 for Mac are compatible with earlier versions of Word. You can also open them in Word for Windows.

However, you may lose certain document formatting. That means your document may not look the way you intended on other machines.

So, before you share a document with others, check file compatibility. Mac Word has a handy tool that will help you with this.

To check document compatibility in Word 2008 for Mac, follow these steps:

1. Open the Toolbox by clicking the Toolbox icon

2. Click the wrench icon in the Toolbox to open the Compatibility Report

3. Click the dropdown box and select the version of Word with which you’re checking compatibility 4. Click Check Document 5. In the Results box, you’ll see a list of compatibility errors, if applicable 6. You can select an item in the Results box. This displays an explanation in the Explanation box 7. You can opt to correct a compatibility error, or opt to ignore it.
