Working With Bulleted and Numbered Lists in Word

By James Marshall, About.com

For many people, creating a list in Word is a chore. But it creating a bulleted or numbered list is easy if you take advantage of the options Word provides.

To begin a list, simply click either the Bullets or Numbering button on the Formatting toolbar.

When you create a list using the toolbar buttons, it is best to allow Word to format the list automatically. Then, when you want to make changes to the format, you can do so in when the list is complete.

To change the format of a list, double-click one of the bullet points or numbers. The Bullets and Numbering dialog box opens. There are a number of predefined list formats from which you can choose. Select the style you want to apply and click OK.

You can also customize a list style by clicking Customize. The Customize Bulleted List (or Customize Numbered List) dialog box gives you a number of options.

In the case of bulleted lists, you can select from one of the existing bullet styles by selecting it. Or you can select a different symbol or number format by clicking the Character button. The Font button allows you to change fonts.

With numbered lists, you can specify the format you would like to use for the numbers. Again, you can also change the font.

Use the control box to select the indentation for the character or number. The Text position section changes the position of the text relative to the left margin. Tab space after sets the position of the first line of text. Indent at changes the position of all subsequent lines.

Once you have made your changes, click OK on each of the open dialog boxes.
