Displaying the Function Key Commands

By James Marshall, About.com

Those of us who used WordPerfect back in the early days will have a different understanding of the term “template”. Instead of thinking of a template as a document from which other documents with the same formatting are created, we immediately remember that little paper strip that affixed to the keyboard and showed the commands associated with the function keys.

You may be surprised to find that Word has a similar, although much more high-tech, guide: An onscreen toolbar. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this feature, it really is something to see! It is a clickable toolbar that shows the function key number and lists the associated command – and when you hit the shift, ctrl, or alt key, it changes to show the command associated with the keystroke.

To turn this feature on, follow these simple steps:

1. From the Tools menu, select Customize…
2. Click on the Toolbars tab
3. Check the box beside Function key display
4. Click OK

It is a great way to learn the commands!
