Do You Use Illegal Software?

Wednesday May 12, 2004
Most people realize that installing software borrowed from a friend or downloaded from the internet is illegal. However, you may be using software illegally without even knowing it: Oftentimes, installing software on multiple computers is a no-no, and buying OEM versions is a definite license violation. If you're unsure if you're respecting the copyright holder's rights, now would be a good time to read the EULA (End User License Agreement) that comes with your software.

For those of you who knowingly use illegal software, I urge you to reconsider your actions and look into freeware such as Open Office...

I would like to teach computers in my own, small training center. I want to teach only evenings so there won’t be frequent use of software.

Is there any way to purchase MS software legally for such situations? E.g Infrequent use (which is another reason I hate to pay full price) & a very small startup budget (a couple of thousand dollars).

I would happily purchase 5-6 licenses once I’m making money. But, it seems that unless I have thousands of dollars to spend on software I can’t make a go of it. And, if I can’t make a profit then I can’t resell the software if I close the doors.

Here are a couple of sample sites:

https://shop.edirectsoftware.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=16133

If these are illegal would someone with official or legal authority go on record and denounce these specific sites in a public forum? If not, why not? THese sites swear they are perfectly legal and give all sorts of justification.

On the other hand, I know IT departments have, among other CDs for use on their networks and in every case I’m familiar with, a CD with MS Office on it that is good for mulitple machines for new machines, new harddrives, etc. They DON’T go to Staples and buy a new Software package everytime. ]

My last two three jobs I was responsible for loading office on workstations. So I’ve used these discs personally.

They’re part of a kit of other CDs but I can’t find out where they come from or whether I have to be MSDN certified or something…

I know there are other Office Software options but few people want them.

I confess it’s very tempting to buy OEM software or pirated. Until MS lowers their prices I’m not sure if I have any alternatives…

pls advise-
D
